LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (FEBRUARY 2025)—Lawrence Union Free School District celebrated World Read Aloud Day, an annual event that encourages the joy of reading and fosters a love of storytelling. This year, Lawrence High School’s National Honor Society students played a special role in bringing the celebration to life by visiting Lawrence Primary School and Lawrence Early Childhood Center classrooms as guest readers.

Ten enthusiastic National Honor Society Lawrence High School students spent the day reading to younger students, igniting their imaginations with engaging stories and interactive reading sessions. Afterward, children had the opportunity to ask their high school guests questions, creating a memorable exchange between the students from different age groups. The excitement and smiles shared between the high schoolers and LPS students made the event truly special, sparking new connections and a shared love for reading.

Additionally, Lawrence UPK students joined the celebration by tuning in to hear stories being read by authors themselves. The children listened to two delightful books: No David! by David Shannon and We Who Produce Pearls by Joanna Ho. These stories inspired conversations about the themes of the books, and the children eagerly chose one or two books to take home to read with their families, further promoting literacy and the joy of reading at home. The event was part of a nationwide celebration, as classrooms all across America joined in to hear stories read by authors, reinforcing the importance of literacy and encouraging a culture of reading in homes and schools.
